Types and Functions of Tree Roots

Trees typically have several different types of roots. The majority of a tree's roots, however, are tiny thin, flexible feeder roots. These roots are designed to suck in water and any nutrients from the soil, and they are typically found less than two feet below the surface of the soil.

The feeder roots transfer what they absorb to larger woody transport roots. These woody roots also help structurally stabilize the tree, since feeder roots are too flexible to provide all the structural support the tree needs.

Yellow leaves in the fall can be a beautiful sight. However, if your tree's leaves turn colors at a different time of year, you may wonder what's wrong, and you'd be right to do so. Whether the leaves have mottled yellow, brown, and black spots or whether they just look bright yellow like fall came early, it's typically not a good sign.

Anytime your tree's leaves start to turn yellow, you should identify the cause quickly. In some cases, the tree may need treatment to save its life, or to save the lives of other nearby trees. Here are some of the potential problems that could cause yellowing of some or all of your tree's leaves out of season.

1. Water Stress

When stressed by either too little water or too much water, a tree can struggle and may show that struggle through its leaves. For instance, a tree may start to drop some of its leaves (which may turn yellow or brown first) as a classic sign of drought stress.

However, too much water could also cause yellowing leaves in some cases. Overwatered foliage may also be extra-light in color or more brittle than usual. A leaning tree can be a real concern, especially if the tree could fall on your home, across the sidewalk, or into the street. Pinpoint the reason for the lean so you can determine the best solution.

Location Issues

A lean doesn't always indicate a health issue with the tree itself. Often, the location of the tree has resulted in the development of the lean.

Shade and Crowding

Some trees grow well when shaded beneath a taller tree or in the shade of a building, while others will twist and lean to get a full share of sunlight. Many shorter-growing flowering trees, for example, grow perfectly straight even when placed right next to a taller tree, but many taller trees need plenty of room and will lean if they are too crowded.

If your tree leans due to crowding, thinning the canopies of surrounding trees to allow in more light while also staking and supporting the leaning tree may be able to correct the problem.

Poor Soil Structure

Not all soil is conducive to strong rooting. The main anchoring roots of a tree grow horizontally in the top 2 feet of soil , although some tree varieties have strong taproots that grow vertically to a much greater depth. If the soil is too compact for the roots to penetrate, then the tree may lean. Overly sandy soil can also cause leaning simply because the soil structure is too weak to anchor the tree.

Soil structure is difficult to remedy once the tree is planted, but tree supports may be able to help prevent further leaning or falling.

Outside Damage

Damages to a tree, particularly the roots, can lead to leaning. These types of leans can be dangerous since they are more likely to lead to a fallen tree.

Storm Damage

High winds, particularly when combined with rain-drenched soil, can lead to a lean. A tree that is leaning by 40 percent or more has a higher likelihood of coming down in a storm. If you have a leaning tree before a storm, or one that begins to develop a lean after high winds, you may notice disturbed soil around the base of the trunk. This soil disturbance may indicate an impending fall.

Mechanical damage is the term used when the use of human tools on or near a tree causes harm to the plant. Often, homeowners are unaware that an action can cause mechanical damage. Learn some of the ways these tree injuries can occur so that you can avoid mechanical damage.

Lawn Tools

Lawnmowers, string trimmers, and any other tool you use to keep your lawn looking great can cause damage to a tree. Damages are usually accidental, and you may not even be aware the damage occurred until the tree begins to experience problems.

Damage

Trees have a thin tissue layer beneath their bark called the cambium. This layer is responsible for all the nutrient and water transport in the tree. When the bark and cambium layer is stripped off, such as by a string trimmer line or a lawnmower scraping against the trunk, then nutrient flow is interrupted. If too much of the cambium becomes damaged, the tree will die.

Further, the wound from the damage can make the tree susceptible to certain diseases and pests.

Prevention

The easiest way to prevent damage is to avoid using tools near the tree trunk. Instead of grass, consider mulching beneath trees instead. With mulch, you have no need to mow or trim near the trunk. If you must have grass, consider installing trunk guards to protect the tree against lawn tools.

Ropes and Lines

Ropes are sometimes tied around trees to stabilize them, or you may use a rope to hang a hammock or other item. Unfortunately, ropes can also cause mechanical damage to the trunk.

Damage

Rope damage occurs by either constriction or bark removal. If a rope is left in place and not loosened as the tree grows, then the trunk will be constricted by the rope. This not only creates a weak point on the trunk, it can eventually cut into the cambium layer and restrict nutrient flow.

Ropes can also rub on a tree, causing bark loss. When bark is lost completely around the trunk, this is called girdling. Girdling is deadly to trees.

Prevention

Your tree service can properly support trees with specially made tree ties designed not to cut into the trunk. You should still monitor tied trees and remove or loosen the ropes if they begin to constrict growth.

As for other ropes, don't leave them tied around the trunk for more than a few days. Also, wrap a heavy piece of fabric around the trunk before placing the rope. The fabric cuts down on friction so that the bark remains undamaged.

Heavy Equipment

Heavy equipment on the lawn is sometimes necessary, especially if you do work on your home.

Damage

Heavy equipment, just like lawn tools, can cause bark and trunk damage if the equipment encounters the tree. The real concern, though, is soil compaction. The increased weight of the equipment on top of the soil presses it down so that fewer open pores are in the soil substrate. This compaction, in turn, makes it more difficult for nutrients and water to siphon down to the tree roots.

Even growth can be affected, as it can be more difficult for trees to send out new roots in heavily compacted soil.

Prevention

The best prevention is to keep the equipment off your lawn and away from the trees as much as possible.

You can't always prevent compaction, especially if you need to use the equipment for important repairs or upgrades. If you suspect that soil compaction is an issue beneath your trees, your tree professional can aerate the soil to help increase the porosity of the soil. Aeration combined with mulching and the addition of organic matter with the soil can help counteract the compaction problem.

The Atlantic and Gulf hurricane season can stretch from early summer well into early winter. Even those who live inland have to deal with high winds and possible tornadoes when a storm moves in from the coast.

Landscape trees are often the first to suffer, which can be a major problem. Falling trees and dropped branches can damage buildings and cars, bring down power lines, or injury those below. Knowing what to look for before the storms arrive enables you to fix any issues before your trees cause major damage.

Verify the General Health of the Tree

Anything that compromises the health of a tree can increase the chances of dropped limbs or toppling during a storm event. Taking the time to survey the trees both before and periodically throughout the storm season can help you catch problems early.

Damage

The most obvious visible damage is broken branches. Branches that barely hang on need removing and are flush to the trunk or main lateral branch to which they attach. Otherwise, they will likely come down violently during the next wind event. Obviously, dead or dying branches should also be removed.

Take damage to the trunk seriously. If a large amount of bark has been stripped, for example, the canopy of the tree could be weak and dying. A tree service can determine if the bark damage is extensive enough to warrant concern.

Disease Symptoms

For newly leaning trees or trees that have an increasing angle of lean, then the roots may have failed. Sometimes in wet soils, particularly if they are sandy, shallow-rooted trees develop a weakened hold on the soil. This can cause the tree to topple during a rain and wind event.

Crossed branches in the canopy rub together. Over time, this weakens the branches and increases the chances of them breaking and falling onto something or someone below.

The twisted, interesting trunks and massive spreading canopies of Southern live oak trees ( Quercus virginiana ) are the trees' most outstanding legacies. Due to their iconic looks and long lifespans, numerous live oaks grow in the warmer coastal areas of the U.S. states including along the sandy plains of southern Mississippi. Here are three reasons to pay attention to your live oak trees in the Ocean Springs region.

1. Live Oaks Are a Commitment to the Future

Whether you plant a young live oak sapling, or you own property that's home to one or more mature live oaks, you're responsible for a tree that can live for hundreds of years. The oldest known Southern live oak grows near Charleston, South Carolina. Known as the Angel Oak, the tree is likely between 400 and 500 years old.

Despite surviving many natural disasters, the Angel Oak measures 66 feet in height, which is rare for live oaks. The species tend to grow wider than tall. Angel Oak offers a grand total of 17,200 square feet of shade, with one single branch extending 187 feet in length.

If you want your live oak to reach a grand old age, you must provide proper care for the tree. When you make that commitment to care for your tree and follow through, you give your live oak tree the best chances of surviving and thriving for many generations.

2, Live Oaks Aren't Completely Problem-Free

Live oak trees are resistant to many of the issues and conditions that plague other shade trees and oaks. However, a few bugs and diseases can adversely impact the live oak tree. As with all plants, live oak trees that are sick, suffering from drought, or otherwise unhealthy are more prone to pest and disease problems.

Two common insect pests that infest live oaks are gall wasps and black twig borers. Gall wasps sometimes lay their eggs inside the leaves and stems of live oak branches. Galls (swollen round growths) form at the site where the eggs are. Branch and foliage death may occur where the galls are.

Black twig borers lay their eggs inside holes that they drill into live oak twigs. After laying their eggs, the female twig borers insert ambrosia fungus in the egg cavities to feed herself, other adult borers, and their larvae. Infected twigs turn brown and die on the tree.

Other potential problems with live oak trees include:

Oak wilt from beetles or root grafts
Canker in various forms
Chestnut blight
Leaf blight from bacteria

Spring has arrived. This is the season of warmer temperatures, abundant rainfall, and generous tree growth. These factors combine to create beauty and comfort, but they also create the perfect conditions for a certain tree disease to proliferate: anthracnose. If you have trees on your property, here are the basics you need to know about this common springtime tree ailment.

What Is Anthracnose?

Anthracnose is a fungal disease that can affect many different species of trees and also many garden plants and flowering plants. Like most fungi, those that cause anthracnose reproduce quickly in warm, moist conditions, which is why the disease typically appears in the springtime.

What Are the Signs of Anthracnose?

The primary symptom of anthracnose is the appearance of brown, dead spots on the tree's leaves. The spots may initially appear right next to the leaves' veins before spreading outward. Some trees may also develop little sores or brown spots, known as cankers, on their twigs.

How Serious Is Anthracnose

Anthracnose can make a tree look pretty bad, but thankfully, it's not as serious as it looks. The effects of the disease are mostly aesthetic. Unlike other fungi, which may move deeper into a tree's trunk and cause more serious illness and death, those that cause anthracnose remain pretty superficial. Your tree may look ugly, but it will recover as the season goes on.

There is one exception, however. When anthracnose appears on a flowering dogwood tree, the situation is quite serious. Unlike most other plants, dogwoods aren't skilled at fighting off the fungi that cause anthracnose. With each season, an affected dogwood tree will grow weaker and weaker, eventually succumbing to the infection. Dogwoods can recover but only with intensive care.

How Do You Care for a Tree With Anthracnose?

If you have a dogwood tree with anthracnose - or any other tree that you want to help out because you can't stand its blotchy appearance - implement these practices to help fight off the fungi.

Prune away any diseased branches, and dispose of them properly, such as by burning them.
Water the tree during dry periods, but apply water to the soil only.
Have the tree professionally pruned to create more space between the branches for airflow. This keeps foliage dry so the fungi don't replicate as quickly.
Collect and destroy leaves as they fall in the autumn.

In very serious cases, you can have your tree sprayed with fungicides every 7 to 10 days. These are most effective when you begin application in early spring. Fungicide application is generally only feasible and necessary for flowering dogwoods and other small, ornamental trees - not large shade trees.

What Other Tree Diseases May Be Mistaken For Anthracnose?

If your tree shows signs of disease this spring, look it over closely to ensure the symptoms are, indeed, indicative of anthracnose and not one of these other ailments.

Powdery Mildew Disease

Are the spots on your tree's leaves white, rather than brown? This is a sign of powdery mildew disease, which is caused by another moisture-loving fungus. You only need to worry if the disease appears on fruit trees; they need to be sprayed to protect the fruit. Other trees will recover on their own.

Brown Spot Needle Blight

Anthracnose only affects broadleaf tree, not needled pine trees. If your pine tree's needles are turning brown and splotchy, it may have a condition called brown spot needle blight, which slows its growth and can kill young seedlings.

Oak Wilt

If you have an oak with brown, patchy leaves, look closely at those leaves. If the patches begin at the edge of the leaf and grow towards the vein, the tree may have oak wilt, not anthracnose. Choose Trees That Tolerate Dry Soil

Many trees require moist soil. Even if you water them regularly, they may never quite thrive in a yard that is naturally dry. The following trees, however, will tolerate drier soil and periods of drought - and they're known to grow well in USDA zone 9.

Scarlet Oak

If you're looking for a large shade tree, the scarlet oak is a good choice. It has a mature height of 60 to 80 feet and grows up to 24 inches per year, according to Arbor Day Foundation. Scarlet oaks prefer full sunlight, and while they grow best in normal moisture levels, they're highly adaptable and can tolerate drought. Their name comes from their brilliant red fall color. They do produce acorns that some homeowners find a hassle to clean up.

Lacebark Elm

The lacebark elm is a medium-sized tree that grows to about 40 feet tall, but produces copious shade. It has thick, glossy leaves that turn yellow or purple in the fall. Lacebark elms are incredibly resilient and low-maintenance. You'll never have to prune, fertilize, or spray it for pests, although periodic watering can be helpful in dry soils.

American Sycamore

Apply Mulch to the Soil

Even though the trees above can tolerate drier soil than most, you can still help them along by applying mulch to the soil around your tree. The mulch will help trap moisture in the soil so it still stays somewhat moist when rain has been scarce. Here are a few tips for success with mulching:

Choose organic mulch, like bark, which will break down slowly and add nutrients to the soil.
Don't pack mulch directly against the tree trunk; this can lead to rot.
Add a new layer of mulch each spring to keep the layer at a thickness of about two to four inches.

If you know your soil is nutrient-dense, you may be able to get away with using gravel or stone as a mulch. It will still trap in moisture, even though it does not break down and add nutrients to the soil.

Deep Water Periodically

You can also counteract some of the dryness by deep watering your trees periodically. Deep watering means applying the water in a way that encourages it to soak well down into the soil, where the roots are located.

To deep water, use a sprinkler, and make sure it soaks the area of the tree directly beneath the foliage, which is known as the drip zone. Be careful not to soak the tree's trunk. Set a soup can in the area being sprinkled. When there are a few inches of water in the can, you can stop watering.

1. Crepe Myrtle

3 Steps to Prepare Coastal Soils for Flower and Vegetable Gardening

Depending on the location of your future garden, you have many tasks ahead to get the soil in shape. Here are three ways to reach your gardening goals.

1. Schedule Proper Land Clearing

When you're clearing overgrown forest, scrub, or grassland, hire an experienced tree service/land clearing crew. With their powerful, precise equipment and land-clearing skills, they get the job done efficiently and thoroughly.

A large garden plot would take many hours to dig with a hand shovel. If your soil is clay-based, it will take double the amount of time to turn the soil over. 4 Tree Diseases to Watch for in Moist Conditions

Fungi and many species of bacteria prefer moist environments. For this reason, when conditions are moist, you need to be on high alert for signs of disease in your trees.

Most tree diseases are caused by moisture-loving fungi and bacteria, so symptoms often first appear after a period of heavy rain or a long stretch of moist, humid days. Below, discover four tree diseases that are particularly common during moist periods.

1. Phomopsis Blight

Phomopsis blight is a fungal infection caused by the species Phomopsis juniperovora. It primarily affects cypress trees, such as red cedar and mountain juniper. However, you should watch all of your evergreens for signs of this disease.

Symptoms usually first appear in the early summer after a long, wet spring. The tips of new shoots begin to die, and then new needles start to turn brown. If the infection is allowed to persist, the fungi may form small, black fruiting bodies on the dead needles.

To keep phomopsis blight under control, prune away all affected branches — sanitizing your shears with rubbing alcohol between cuts. Water your evergreens from the ground, not from overhead, to reduce moisture accumulation on the needles.

2. Fire Blight

Fire blight is an infection caused by the bacterial species Erwinia amylovora . It primarily affects fruit trees such as pear and crabapple, but it can also appear on mountain ash and hawthorn trees. Symptoms tend to appear suddenly in the early spring. Trees develop cankers on their branches or trunks. These cankers seep a light-tan gel that later turns black. Any fruits that appear on the tree shrivel up and turn black as well.

If left unaddressed, fire blight can move through the wood and claim entire branches and kill the whole tree in some cases. Have a tree care expert prune away diseased limbs as soon as you notice symptoms. Also, have copper-based sprays applied to your tree to help reduce the spread of infection.

3. Verticillium Wilt

Verticillium wilt is caused by two related fungal species, Verticillium albo-atrum and Verticillium dahliae. Many common varieties of trees are susceptible, including ash, elm, maple, sumac, oak, and catalpa. The fungi that cause the disease spread through the soil. Trees can develop symptoms at any time, but symptoms are often first noticed after a cool, wet period.

Verticillium wilt causes the tree's leaves to turn yellow and wilt. Usually, symptoms initially appear on just one or two branches before later spreading through the tree. Some cases are fatal, and the tree dies within months. Other cases can be managed by providing the tree with fertilizer and trimming away heavily infected branches. Fungicides are not effective in treating verticillium wilt.

4. Anthracnose

Anthracnose is a common fungal disease that can affect any tree species. Different species of fungi cause anthracnose in different trees. For example, Discula fraxinea causes the condition in ash trees, and Stegophora ulmea causes it in elm trees. The primary symptom of anthracnose is irregularly shaped brown lesions on the leaves. Lower leaves that are closest to the trunk tend to be the most affected, as these leaves are the wettest.

Anthracnose is not life-threatening — it is mostly a cosmetic problem. You can manage most cases by trimming away the badly infected branches, cleaning up leaves and other debris near the base of the tree, and always watering the tree from the ground rather than from up above.
